Canadian Immigration Minister Announces Refugee Relocation Plans

The immigration minister of Canada has announced new plans to increase the number of refugees allowed to make Canada their home and expedite their applications. The government is increasing the number of refugees admitted this year to 45,000 from 23,500. The application process for permanent residency will be expedited as well. There are currently more than 40,000 refugees and their families in Canada waiting on a permanent residency visa.

This year alone, 17,900 newcomers have become Canadian permanent residents. Marco Mendicino, the Canadian Immigration Minister, said this new plan is one more way Canada shines its light and credited refugees who have given back to their communities and country, even during the global crisis of this past year.

Mendicino also announced two other initiatives. The Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot will allow the country to welcome additional refugees, but also changes the stereotype of the newcomers as victims.

The pilot will recognize the skills and talents of the migrants by welcoming them through the various economic immigration streams. Mendicino said the project will be extended for an additional two years and approve up to 500 new applicants. Fees will be waived, and the applications expedited.
